Anderson Park (Highway 54 west of Carrboro)
Lots of shade
Multiple play areas
Has the lake with food for feeding ducks/geese and fish
Great music equipment (drums, bells); even fun for adults!
Has a dog park
Lots of trees
Good picnic areas near lake
Carrboro Town Commons Play Area (West Main Street next
to Town Hall, Carrboro)
Fenced and shaded
Good for small kids (not a lot of "drop-offs")
Cedar Falls Park (601 Weaver Dairy Road, Chapel Hill)
Nice partly shaded playground and good hiking trails.
Chapel Hill Community Center Park
(120 South Estes Drive, Chapel Hill)
Great equipment, soft surface underneath, bathrooms open year-round,
always people there to talk to
Mostly because there are always other people there. The rose
garden adds an extra dimension, as does the hill.
When it's cold outside you can go to the parent-tot time (Sept-May,
Mon-Fri from 10-12) in the Community Center gym and let the kids
run off some energy!
I love the rubber footing and there is always a nice mix of people there
There is so much to do (playground, big hill to run up/down, rose garden, trails
Central location
Clean and open; room to run
Has a big "sandbox" volleyball court
Has good bathrooms inside the Community Center
You always see somebody you know
Good swings
Good when you have children of different sizes/needs
Duke Park (199 E Knox Street, Durham Durham off Roxboro and Interstate 85)
It is huge, shaded and there are two separate areas one for big kids and one for little ones.
Forest Hills Park (32 Oak Drive, Durham)
Has great sand and water play areas
Great to visit when it's warm: put the kids in swimsuits and let them play in the water area
Homestead Park (100 Northern Park Drive off Homestead
Road, Chapel Hill)
In summer, lots of trees around, so it is not too hot
It has a great play area, with a jungle gym, double slide, and
swing set. There are also soccer and baseball fields, paths, a
pond, and picnic tables in the shade. But the bathrooms close
from October to May.
Good variety of play structures
Kids love the wooded area
Dog Park (fun for kids to watch the dogs)
Oakwood Park (Intersection of Oakwood Drive and Berkley
Road, Chapel Hill)
Fenced in, plenty of swings, has shade in the summer
Umstead Park (Umstead Road between MLK Jr Blvd & Estes
Drive Ext)
It has so many different things to do--climbing structures,
sand, water. Not great for keeping several kids contained (for
that, Oakwood Park is good because it's fenced in).
Umstead Park for the oldest kid, because the bridge, stream,
and path through the woods are a nice break from the wildness
of the playground. However, this is also my least favorite park
for toddlers, because of the stream and its much-too-easy accessibility
from the play areas
I prefer Umstead Park for my preschooler, since the playground
equipment is lower to the ground, and the park is less crowded than the
Community Center Park.
It has a big play area, and a walking trail and tends to be less crowded than other parks
Wilson Park (Williams Street, off
North Greensboro Street, Carrboro)
Has plenty of space
The creek is in walking distance but not too close
Not as crowded as the Community Center and gets shade!
Great playground (different from other parks)
Has baby swings and a good sand area
Good for toddlers
Not too big/not too small
Has decent bathrooms
Climbing area
BIG slide, plus smaller ones for the little kids
Has a tennis court
Good picnicking areas
